A Robust Mobility Scooter that Folds “Like a Pram”

The mobility scooter they nickname ‘the laptop’ for its unique ability to fold up and pack into a boot or a plane, is about to be launched for the first time in New Zealand.

Made out of aeroplane aluminium, weighing less than 30kg all up and meeting European and USA certified manufacturing and safety standards the Easy Travel Elite is being brought to New Zealand by distributor Active Lite.

The Easy Travel Elite folds like a pram on the release of safety catches, so that it can be carried in the boot of a car, or by an aircraft. Because it is foldable it is very convenient for users and families with disabled or elderly scooter drivers. It is also ideal for New Zealand’s tourism industry. Despite its lightweight build and portability, it still, in many ways, replaces the mobility function of a car for the elderly.

Active Lite says that they were unable to find another foldable mobility scooter distributed in New Zealand, which is why they brought it in.

A second model, the Easy Travel Active-8, will also be marketed in New Zealand. At 53kgs, this larger scooter has more features but can still be broken down easily into key parts for transporting.

The scooter is manufactured by cutting edge Israeli technology company Tzora Active Systems, which concentrates on medical rehabilitation products including mobility aids. The original brand of Tzora scooter has been available around the world (except NZ) since the late 1990s.

The models being sold in New Zealand are enhanced versions of the original, developed within the last two years. They are widely exported. Easy Travel Elite, the foldable model, has been designed with its engine in the front wheel, in order to maintain lightness and portability, while retaining performance excellence.

Daniel Goldwater, Business Development Manager of Active Lite said he was impressed by the engineering credentials of the scooters.

“They’re high tech, high quality pieces of Israeli engineering,” he says. “They’re different from all other scooters many of which are made of denser, heavier materials. The Easy Travel range is tough and robust. They’re designed for ergonomic action at hip level, so you can fold them down or take them apart very, very easily. The beauty of both is that they don’t need a hoist, ramp or crane to lift or transport them. They’re just so easy to manage.”

Active Lite will fully support the Easy Travel Elite with a service department.

Like a well-engineered laptop, the scooter is not cheap. It is expected to sell direct to the consumer for around $3,500 plus GST, with the larger Active-8 selling for $4,500 plus GST.

Easy Travel Elite is IATA approved, meaning there is no problem with carrying the scooter itself in plane holds, because of its size and weight, and no problems with carrying its batteries.

The scooters are expected to be launched first through Remuera Physiotherapy in Auckland, and will be demonstrated through retirement villages throughout the Auckland region.
