Pennsylvania Secretary of Aging Nora Dowd Eisenhower and Department of Health Secretary Dr. Calvin B. Johnson today encouraged older Pennsylvanians to take steps to reduce their risk of stroke, the number three cause of death in the U.S. and a leading cause of disability among Americans.   ;   A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen to the brain either bursts or becomes blocked by a clot. When part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, it begins to die.   « Although stroke affects people of all ages, risk factors are usually higher among older adults, » said Secretary Dowd Eisenhower. « Nationwide, stroke affects someone every 45 seconds and claims a life every three minutes. »   ;   « In 2003, nearly 8,200 Pennsylvanians died from strokes – 7,400 of those deaths occurred in people 65 years of age or older, » said Secretary Johnson. « It is important for individuals to know they can reduce their risk of stroke by eating foods that are low in fat and high in fiber such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats and low-fat dairy products; engaging in physical activity; and not using any type of tobacco. »   ;   According
